Dr. Beth Virginia Blau, Superintendent of Schools September, 2009

Dear Web Guests,

This year the district will continue to improve our program so as to facilitate the delivery of instruction, spark student interest, and expand parent communication.  We will be putting the finishing touches on our plans for the implementation of the International Baccalaureate program scheduled to begin in September, 2010, and have increased the number of sections in our music technology program.  Our elementary foreign language program will now include fourth grade and teachers in grades kindergarten, four, and six will be receiving advanced training in literacy and word study instruction.

Bond construction was started this summer and will continue well into 2010.  Upon your return you will notice replacement curbs, sidewalks, and parking at Bayview, Kirdahy, and Manetuck, and there should be completed new boilers at Bellew, Oquenock, and Westbrook.  The Beach Street rotunda will be sporting a new roof and the girls’ locker room at the high school will have been completely renovated.  The target date for completion of the high school’s turf field and track is October 1, 2009 (homecoming is October 10th  so we’re keeping our fingers crossed that the summer will be crisis free).

We have several new faces this year including three new principals at the secondary level.  Dr. Anthony Bridgeman will take over the reins at the High School and Andrew O’Farrell and Daniel Marquardt will become the new educational leaders at Beach Street and Udall Road Middle Schools respectively.  Familiar faces in new positions include Bernadette Burns, our new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Dr. Magda Parvey, who will assume new responsibilities as Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Curriculum and Instruction.  Jeanne Dowling has officially been named Assistant Director for Special Education and Pupil Personnel Services, and Timothy Horan will attempt to fill Wayne Shierant’s shoes when he retires on December 31st.  We congratulate all and wish them success in their new positions.

I am hoping to meet and greet each of you as the year progresses and, as always, please do not hesitate to share your insights with me as you see me out and about.  I shall also update you regularly via the district newsletter and the website, both excellent sources of information about district happenings.

Please accept my heartfelt wishes for an exciting and productive school year.

Sincerely,

Beth Virginia Blau, Ed.D.
