Four hundred and fifty six members of the West Islip Class of 2009 received their diplomas under an amazingly blue and sunny sky. Also amazing, was this incredible group of students who have logged 30,000 hours of community service hours and who have been awarded $4.5 million in scholarships!
After 17 years of being principal of West Islip High School, Mr. Ken Hartill spoke about the honor and privilege that has been his to have been entrusted with the responsibility to help guide West Islip students, "as they developed intellectually, socially, and morally."
Students and staff proceeded onto the field to the tune of "Pomp and Circumstance", performed by the Graduation Ensemble, led by James Krais. The West Islip American Legion Post No. 1738 presented the flags as Student Senate President, Nicole Muller led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. The National Anthem was sung by National School Choral Award winner, Amanda Corey. Speeches were given by this year's Valedictorian, Sherilyn Hellberg, Co-Salutatorians James Criscuolo and Mary Priolo. Vocal Motion sang "This Day" under the direction of Sal Fiore, and Paige Engledrum gave a special tribute to retiring principal, Mr. Hartill. It was a beautiful day for all! Congratulations to the graduates and their families!
